Description

Teff is the smallest seed in the world – and the most nutritionally dense.

Naturally gluten-free, low GI and supercharged with all the good stuff – like iron, protein, calcium and other essential minerals, teff may be small in size, but it’s big in benefits.

Teff can be eaten as a seed – in everything from porridge to salads and desserts, or used as a flour in baking.

You may be familiar with quinoa? Well, teff is a lot like that, but so much better… It leads all the seeds in the nutrient stakes and has a delicious nutty flavour that works well with sweet or savoury recipes. Think breakfast, lunch, dinner, and all the snacks in between. Where some gluten-free flours can be tricky to work with in the kitchen, teff flour is a bit of a star.

Super versatile and easy to use, teff flour can be substituted in to give everyday recipes a healthy, gluten-free boost. It also performs really well in baking – giving a delightful texture to everything from cakes, muffins, breads and pancakes. So the short answer is, teff is the versatile staple you need in your pantry.

What teff looks like.

Teff seed is about the size of a poppy seed and grows in a range of colours from ivory to brown. While health-wise they are all the same, the different colour seeds enjoy slightly different flavours.

Ivory teff is best described as having a slightly sweet, light chestnut-like flavour, while brown teff has a richer, earthier tone, closer to a hazelnut.

Teff Tribe offers the most comprehensive range of teff products in Australia and currently offers teff in seed, flour and flake form, plus a growing collection of baking mixes, pastas and instant porridge.

When it comes to health benefits, teff leads all the seeds.

Naturally gluten-free, and jam-packed with all the good stuff like calcium, iron, protein, resistant starch and essential minerals like magnesium and manganese, teff is something of a superstar. It just goes to show that good things really do come in small packages! When lovingly stone-milled to flour, the entire seed is crushed – meaning it retains all of the nutritional benefits that many other seeds lose during processing.

In short, it’s a nutritional powerhouse. But most importantly, it’s delicious.

Teff is an excellent source of plant protein with a great combination of eight essential amino acids – including lysine – needed for the body’s growth and repair.

Being low GI and consisting of up to 40% resistant starches, teff can aid weight loss, help lower cholesterol and control blood sugar levels and aid digestion.

One of the most common deficiencies in the world, iron is essential for healthy blood, brain development and a well functioning immune system.

Boasting the highest levels for a grain, teff is a great alternative calcium source for those who can’t consume dairy which helps to strengthen bones.

and many other essential minerals like manganesecopper and zinc which help promote good health and wellness and are vital for maintaining optimal body function.

Brilliant for Sourdough

Best sourdough starter! I can get my sourdough waffles going from teff and water to a strong mix of healthy bacteria in three days. Other flours I have tried take a week or more to achieve a similar strength!

Thank you for your glowing review, Alex! We are thrilled to hear that our Ivory Teff Flour has been instrumental in achieving a strong and healthy sourdough starter in just three days. We take pride in providing high-quality products and it's heartwarming to know that it has made a difference in your sourdough journey. Thank you for choosing our product. Happy baking!

White Teff

Have used this in a gluten free blend and it certainly delivered the way I hoped it would… a nutty flavour with good body. Where possible I buy organic flour and hence reason for a 4 star rating. I am very pleased to see Australian growers producing Teff. I will reorder.

Thanks Maureen, for the thoughtful review. We are glad the teff flour is working well for you.
And yes, we tried hard and managed to source the teff from Australia, grown by the Fraser family. It is not right to import Teff from Ethiopia when their domestic market is already challenged for the supply of Teff, their staple food.
