When it comes to living a healthy and natural lifestyle, what you put on your skin is just as important as what you put inside your body if not more. Since the skin is porous, it absorbs anything you put on it without processing it further. Unlike the liver, kidney, and other organs which can detoxify what you consume further, removing harsh toxins and synthetic elements that can harm the body. The developing organs of babies and children are particularly sensitive to chemicals so it is especially important to use safe products.
A study published in the American Journal of Public Health looked at the skin’s absorption rates of chemicals found in drinking water. It showed that the skin absorbed an average of 64% of the total contaminant dosage. Other studies found the face to be several times more permeable than broad body surfaces and an absorption rate of 100% for underarms and genitalia. Another peer-reviewed study showed 100% absorption for fragrance ingredients (References here)
What you put on your skin ends up inside your body. So check the ingredients in your skin-care routine otherwise harmful ingredients such as harsh, toxic chemicals, colors, and fragrances enter your body, your blood, and your lymphatic system. Most mainstream skin-care products contain a cocktail of carcinogenic chemicals, allergens, and irritants. So must do’s before choosing a skin-care product:
1. Choose certified organic and natural skin-care products.
2. Read labels and get informed about what ingredients to avoid.
3. If you can’t pronounce it, don’t use it!

We use the essential oils in safe amounts – so yes – plus the soap can be diluted.
What age and upwards is it generally recommended?
We would recommend the unscented for newborns. But after that, the soap is safe is for all age groups.
(Kokonati will soon carry an unscented one for newborns too).
Is it safe for the face and hair too?
Yes – although different hair suits different products, we find that the soap is great for short hair. Longer hair needs a conditioner usually.
Is it safe for septic tanks?
Our soap is septic tank safe and will not pollute waste systems.
“Liquid Castile Soap contains no thickeners and therefore has a thinner viscosity. This does not affect its performance, rather reflects it’s natural pure makeup.
It is fab in a foaming pump bottle and can be further diluted. “
This product is the only liquid Kokonati product that comes in plastic instead of a glass bottle. But we did the homework; it is made of recyclable material and can be disposed of in the curbside collection recyclables bin to be remade into fence posts and another consumable packaging, recycled right here in New Zealand.
The only reason we made the hard decision to use a plastic bottle is that a soap product will be used in a wet environment and could easily slip when handling and cause damage if packed in glass.
